The continent of Antarctica spans 14 million square kilometres - one tenth of the world's land mass. It is one and a half times bigger than the USA. Freezing blizzards and scouring snow, driven by the continent's ceaseless gales, make it the harshest, most desolate place on earth. Yet it is also one of the most beautiful and peaceful landscapes on earth. A place of constant and evolving wonderment. This is the first, and perhaps the greatest, of its many paradoxes.
