Young Male Steller Sea Lion Rescued in Juneau

Much like Boardwalk, the female Steller who came to the Center in 2005, Ajowan (AJ) spent two days hauled out on a dock in Juneau where National Marine Fisheries Service officers first observed him.

The one-year-old male looked extremely thin and became more lethargic as time passed.   A brief physical exam and blood sample showed Ajowan had a high white blood count, which usually signals an infection.

After an odyssey of driving, flights, and working with National Marine Fisheries Service personnel to capture the young Steller, Alaska SeaLife Center staff brought Ajowan to Seward on June 2nd.

His condition has improved and if all goes well, he will be released back to Southeast Alaskan waters when he has fully recovered.  Steller sea lions are endangered in much of their range.

The Alaska SeaLife Center is dedicated to understanding and maintaining the integrity of the marine ecosystem of Alaska. We achieve our mission through research, rehabilitation, conservation and public education. The Center's research and rehabilitation facilities and naturalistic exhibits immerse visitors in the dynamic marine ecosystems of Alaska.
