Coral Princess Cruises Passengers Set Up Education Fund for Remote PNG Schoolchildren

So moved were passengers aboard Oceanic Discoverer making an impromptu visit to the tiny island of Witu in PNG’s Bismarck Archipelago, that they set up an education fund for the children who so enthralled them with dance and song.

Located some 300kms from the PNG mainland, the Witu children are hampered by lack of school resources and funds for fees to complete their High School education.

“The kids are certainly happy and hardy,” said Dr Nancy Sullivan, a Madang-based anthropologist guest lecturing aboard CPC’s Oceanic Discoverer, ”but the cost of remote education in PNG is something the families must bear themselves.”

With the full outlay of a complete High School education well over A$1000, plus boarding, the hope of full academic achievement for young Papua New Guineans is largely unachievable.

Already the fund has raised several thousand dollars, securing the full education for at least a couple of the best performing students.

Coral Princess Cruises encourages passengers to bring school materials in their luggage for distribution to remote and disadvantaged schools throughout their PNG and Melanesian itineraries. In the last two years Coral Princess Cruises have distributed hundreds of ‘education packs’ to schools throughout these tiny islands.
